Therapist Consultation/Supervision

One of the most important components of learning to be a therapist is supervision, and I’ve been fortunate to have many wonderful supervisors during my career with diverse backgrounds and approaches. I remember one of my favorite TV shows some years ago was ER, which profiled the experiences of some physicians as they transitioned from students to full fledged doctors and how “learn one, do one, teach one,” was an organizing principal for their professional growth. It’s certainly been true for me that the process of learning never seems to be complete until I can explain what I’m doing to myself and then to others. Thus since early in my career I’ve have taken opportunities to supervise/mentor/consult/do presentations when they arise and have always found these rewarding. When I first learned of the Emotionally Focused Therapy approach to couples work back in 2007 I began immersing myself in attending trainings with Dr. Johnson and then some of her direct trainees, videotaping my work and showing it to some of these people. I got certified in the technique in 2014 and have continued taking advanced trainings. In 2018 I began taking trainings on supervising others in this technique, got approved to begin taking on supervisees individually and in groups, and was certified as a Supervisor in 2020. The process of certification as a Supervisor involved meeting with therapists, discussing and viewing videotape of their work, in turn video-taping my supervisory sessions and showing them to supervisors of supervision. Eventually I presented videos of my work supervising to ICEEFT and was approved as a Certified Supervisor of EFT.
In terms of my approach to supervision/ consultation, it is tailored to the needs of each therapist. Some people come to EFT well into their careers, others at the beginning, some well into EFT training, others new to it. So a balance of specific discussion of skills with emotional support around the process of the work is what I strive for.
